As Pittsburgh's premier training Academy for Musical Theater, we are dedicated to celebrating their talent, encouraging their dreams, and helping develop their abilities. By providing the finest dance, voice and acting training in a positive, fun-filled class setting, the CLO Academy encourages both an appreciation for musical theater and a well-rounded education.

 CLO Academy’s enriched, diverse curriculum is taught by university instructors and experienced professionals in the industry.

Affiliated with one of the most respected musical theater organizations in the country, the CLO Academy provides students with valuable training that prepares them for real-world performance opportunities and professional careers.

Special connections in the community provide opportunities for commercial, film and television auditions for our students. CLO Academy students have the unique opportunity to audition and possibly perform on the Benedum Center stage during the Pittsburgh CLO Summer Season and at the Byham Theater in A Musical Christmas Carol. Academy students have performed in numerous CLO Summer Season productions including Gypsy, Mary Poppins, Disney’s High School Musical, Oklahoma!, Peter Pan and Annie Get Your Gun. This summer, CLO Academy students will take the stage in Disney's Newsies.

At the CLO Academy, we design an individual curriculum for each student based on their strengths and goals, and we strive to offer engaging courses for every skill level. The CLO Academy boasts a 100% post-secondary education placement record. Alumni have attended prestigious universities including Boston College, Carnegie Mellon University, The Julliard School, New York University, Point Park University, Baldwin Wallace, Penn State University and the University of Michigan.  With its diverse programs, students are sure to find the program that’s right for them. PNC Children's School, ages 3-10

Welcoming children ages 3–10, the PNC Children's School focuses on developing self-confidence and exploring creativity through musical theater. Students as young as three use their imaginations as they sing, dance and act their way through fun-filled classes that teach both fundamental performance skills and critical thinking lessons that extend beyond the classroom.

Classes meet conveniently once a week.

Student School, ages 10-18

Perfect for 10–18 year olds, the Student School helps students explore a deeper interest in musical theater and the performing arts field. The Student School is a wonderful way to augment a young performer’s acting, dance or vocal training. This well-rounded program fits even the busiest child’s schedule. Core curriculum includes acting, voice and dance with additional electives available, including Hip Hop and the Acting for TV & Film. Vocal classes in this program are conducted in groups.

Classes meet once a week, typically on Saturdays.

Pre-Professional School, ages 10-18

Designed for ages 10–18, the Pre-Professional School is for focused and motivated students with proficient skills who want to continue training as young adults and plan to pursue a higher level of education and future career in the performance arts. Classes range from beginner through advanced levels. The program encourages students to enroll in a solid core curriculum and diversify their training with multiple electives.

Classes typically meet two nights a week, Monday through Thursday, with some electives held on Saturday.

Performance Opportunities

CLO Academy performance opportunities allow students to work with a professional director, choreographer and music director and perform live on stage for family and friends.

Our 2018 Fall Production was the smash hit, 9 to 5 The Musical, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, based on the seminal 1980 hit movie. Set in the late 1970s. this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic.

Our 2019 Spring Production was the timeless classic,The Music Man Jr!
There's trouble in River City when a fast-talking salesman gets his heart stolen by the town librarian in this adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway classic!

Throughout the year, CLO Academy students also have the exclusive opportunity to audition for CLO Main Stage productions, including CLO Summer Season and A Musical Christmas Carol.  Additionally, we are often called on by local casting directors and theater companies to recommend our students for feature film, television, commercial, and professional auditions throughout the year.  Information regarding those auditions is released to our families on site as it becomes available.

Summer Camps

Pittsburgh CLO Academy's summer performance camps are designed to give kids the opportunity to experience preparing for and performing on the stage. Working with a Director, Music Director and Choreographer, students will create their own exciting musical theater experience! All camps take place at the CLO Academy, which is located in Penn Avenue Place, Downtown (the old Horne's/Lazarus building).

We also offer our Promising Preschoolers camp, Private Lessons, and Master Classes throughout the summer.

In addition to the classroom experience, students will also receive a coupon for a Pittsburgh CLO Summer Season show at the Benedum Center.

2019 Summer Camps will be announced in late December 2018.

Dress Code

After you have registered, please read the following information regarding the dress code and what to bring so you are prepared for the first day of class.  Students will be excused from class if they are not properly dressed.

Acting, Voice and Piano:

  • Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothes
  • Bring a binder and pencil for handouts and notes.


For Girls -

  • Plain colored leotard
  • Plain colored tights (black, skin-tone, ballet pink)
  • Ballet – Shoes should fit snug against foot. Color must be pink. Leather shoes are preferred until upper level classes.
  • Tap – Shoes may be black or tan. They may have a heel, but a wide heel is preferred as opposed to a one or two-inch character shoe.
  • Jazz shoes – recommended but not required. Jazz boots are not permitted.

For Boys:

  • Black dance tights or jazz pants
  • Plain white t-shirt (must be tucked in)
  • Ballet shoes – black or white ballet shoes
  • Tap shoes – black, lace up shoes only.
  • Jazz shoes – recommended but not required. Jazz boots are not permitted.

For Promising Preschool & Creative Theater:

  • Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothes
  • Wear clean tennis shoes, sneakers or ballet shoes
