THE SOUND OF MUSIC

Jul 11, 2023 - Jul 16, 2023

Benedum Center

Music by Richard Rodgers, Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, Book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse

The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become one of the world’s most beloved musicals. The inspirational true story tells the tale of young postulant Maria Rainer, who proves too high-spirited for the religious life and is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Maria transforms the Von Trapp family home from a place of strict rules and regulations to one filled with joy, laughter, and music. In the process, Maria wins the hearts of all seven children--and their father, Captain Von Trapp. When the family discovers that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their navy, the family is forced to escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II. THE SOUND OF MUSIC features a trove of cherished songs, including "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "My Favorite Things," "Do Re Mi," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" and the title number.
