in Musical Theater
Pittsburgh CLO’s 20th Annual Gene Kelly Awards will be held May 29, 2010 at the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts. Celebrating two decades of excellence in high school musical theater!
The Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater were launched in 1991 as a means to recognize and encourage student achievement and to focus the attention of the community and school districts on the importance of musical theater and arts education.
Patterned after Broadway’s Tony® Awards, this event celebrates the power of the Arts to significantly improve all areas of education! High school theater programs are the real winners as show business veterans and community celebrities help to spread the word about the achievements of high school students and their school’s musical theater programs. In the last 20 years, Gene Kelly Award winners have gone on to Broadway and Hollywood careers. Click here for a list of notable Gene Kelly Awards alumni, including Zachary Quinto and Courtney Mazza.
Winners of the Best Actor and Best Actress Awards travel to New York City for the National High School Musical Theater Awards in June. In 2009, Best Actress Elizabeth Bailey and Best Actor Kian McCollum represented Pittsburgh in New York. Kian, then a junior at Chartiers Valley, competed as one of two finalists in the Best Actor category.
The Gene Kelly Awards are co-presented by the University of Pittsburgh, with additional support provided by National City Bank of Pennsylvania, United States Steel Corp. and the CLO Ambassadors. Deloitte is the official auditor for the Gene Kelly Awards.
