EXTRA, EXTRA – IT’S A PITTSBURGH CLO PREMIERE HOT OFF THE PRESS!
They delivered the papers, until they made the headlines! Based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, NEWSIES is the story of Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who rallies “newsies” from across NYC to strike for what’s right after publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer threatens their livelihood. Winner of the Tony Awards® for Best Score and Best Choreography, audiences and critics alike call it “A MUSICAL WORTH SINGING ABOUT!” (The New York Times). Filled with one heart-pounding number after another, including the tap dance extravaganza “King of New York,” NEWSIES is a high-energy eruption of song and dance.

PAUL MILLER (Lighting Designer) 2nd Season for Pittsburgh CLO. Broadway: Amazing Grace, The Illusionists, Legally Blonde, Freshly Squeezed, Laughing Room Only. He’s lit over a dozen Off-Broadway shows and worked at more than 20 Regional Theatres, Internationally (London’s West End, Vienna, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, South Africa, China, Manila and São Paulo) and has been the Lighting Director for New Year’s Eve / Times Square for 18 years.

DIXON REYNOLDS (Costume Designer) is an Associate Professor of Costume Design at State University of New York at Fredonia and a freelance designer. Dixon is the resident costume designer at the Kavinoky Theatre in Buffalo, NY. Designs have been seen at Music Theatre Wichita, Irish Classical Theatre, ART Park, Summer Repertory Theatre, Buffalo United Artists, Shakespeare in Delaware Park, Hartt School of Music, Triad Stage, and American Dance Festival.

Fun Facts

  • NEWSIES is inspired by the real-life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," which began when newspaper publishers raised the prices for newsies, charging a dime more per hundred papers.
     
  • The strike was led by a charismatic young newsboy named Kid Blink, who rallied oprhan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.
     
  • The Broadway production was originally scheduled for a limited 12-week run of 105 performances, however, due to popular demand, NEWSIES went on to run for 1,005 performances over two and a half years.
     
  • In the Broadway production, approximately 150 newspapers were used in every performance, specifically printed with the headline "Trolley Strike Enters Thrid Week."
     
  • NEWSIES was nominated for 23 major theatrical awards.

  • NEWSIES is inspired by the real-life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," which began when newspaper publishers raised the prices for newsies, charging a dime more per hundred papers.
     
  • The strike was led by a charismatic young newsboy named Kid Blink, who rallied oprhan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.
     
  • The Broadway production was originally scheduled for a limited 12-week run of 105 performances, however, due to popular demand, NEWSIES went on to run for 1,005 performances over two and a half years.
     
  • In the Broadway production, approximately 150 newspapers were used in every performance, specifically printed with the headline "Trolley Strike Enters Thrid Week."
     
  • NEWSIES was nominated for 23 major theatrical awards.
