Dear Friends,
Welcome to GYPSY, one of my all-time favorite classic musicals with one of the greatest overtures
in the theater. I am thrilled to be producing it at Pittsburgh CLO for the first time in eighteen
years.
The original Broadway production of GYPSY opened in 1959 and was produced by the legendary
David Merrick and directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins. With music by Jule Styne,
lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents, it introduced to the musical theater
catalogue hit songs such as "Everything's Coming up Roses," "Together (Wherever We Go)," "Small
World," "Some People," "Let Me Entertain You," "All I Need Is the Girl," and "Rose's Turn." It
starred Ethel Merman as Rose, Jack Klugman as Herbie, and Sandra Church as Louise, and received
eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, Best Featured
Actor in a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design
and Best Direction of a Musical, though failed to win any. In 1962 a film adaptation of GYPSY
debuted starring Rosalind Russell, Karl Malden, and Natalie Wood. Russell won the Golden Globe
Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her portrayal of Rose - one of the
more substantive roles for actresses in musical theater.
I look forward to seeing you again for the second half of our subscription season, which boasts
three new but "classic in their own way" musical comedies: THE WEDDING SINGER, KINKY BOOTS
and Rodgers + Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA. For more summer fun please also join us at the CLO
Cabaret Theater for GIRLS ONLY – THE SECRET COMEDY OF WOMEN, now through August.
Thank you for being here, and for letting us entertain you.
Enjoy the show!
