EXTRA, EXTRA – IT’S A PITTSBURGH CLO PREMIERE HOT OFF THE PRESS!
They delivered the papers, until they made the headlines! Based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, NEWSIES is the story of Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who rallies “newsies” from across NYC to strike for what’s right after publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer threatens their livelihood. Winner of the Tony Awards® for Best Score and Best Choreography, audiences and critics alike call it “A MUSICAL WORTH SINGING ABOUT!” (The New York Times). Filled with one heart-pounding number after another, including the tap dance extravaganza “King of New York,” NEWSIES is a high-energy eruption of song and dance.

PATRICIA PHILLIPS (Nun/Medda Larkin) was the first woman of African American decent to play the role of Carlotta in the Phantom of the Opera. She will be joining Pittsburgh CLO’s production of In The Heights in the role of Abuela Claudia. Recent Broadway credits include Kinky Boots, Live From Lincoln Center: Sweeney Todd and was a member of the original Broadway casts of La Boheme, The Secret Garden and The Sound of Music. Television credits include two Tony Award® telecasts, The Sopranos and Everybody’s Fine with Robert De Niro. Ms. Phillips has also been a featured soloist with The Pittsburgh Symphony, The Minnesota Orchestra, The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, The Indianapolis Symphony, The Bay Area Symphony, The Sioux City Symphony, The River City Brass Band and The Virginia Symphony.

JAMES CUNNINGHAM (Music Director) New York credits include Avenue Q, music director for Bunnicula (TheaterworksUSA and original cast recording), Hot Mess In Manhattan (The Araca Project) and Happy Birthday (TACT) for which he also provided original music. His National Tour credits as pianist/conductor include Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Spamalot, Evita and Cats.  For the past three seasons he has been a frequent music director for Casa Mañana where his credits include: Million Dollar Quartet, Spamalot, Rent, Fiddler On The Roof, Les Misérables, Buddy…The Buddy Holly Story, Always…Patsy Cline and Cats.  Regionally, he has also conducted productions for North Carolina Theatre, Sharon Playhouse, Shakespeare Theatre Company, The Engeman Theater, Paper Mill Playhouse, The MUNY and Cape Fear Regional Theatre.  He holds degrees from Manhattan School of Music and New York University.

Fun Facts

  • NEWSIES is inspired by the real-life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," which began when newspaper publishers raised the prices for newsies, charging a dime more per hundred papers.
     
  • The strike was led by a charismatic young newsboy named Kid Blink, who rallied oprhan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.
     
  • The Broadway production was originally scheduled for a limited 12-week run of 105 performances, however, due to popular demand, NEWSIES went on to run for 1,005 performances over two and a half years.
     
  • In the Broadway production, approximately 150 newspapers were used in every performance, specifically printed with the headline "Trolley Strike Enters Thrid Week."
     
  • NEWSIES was nominated for 23 major theatrical awards.

JAMES CUNNINGHAM (Music Director) New York credits include Avenue Q, music director for Bunnicula (TheaterworksUSA and original cast recording), Hot Mess In Manhattan (The Araca Project) and Happy Birthday (TACT) for which he also provided original music. His National Tour credits as pianist/conductor include Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Spamalot, Evita and Cats.  For the past three seasons he has been a frequent music director for Casa Mañana where his credits include: Million Dollar Quartet, Spamalot, Rent, Fiddler On The Roof, Les Misérables, Buddy…The Buddy Holly Story, Always…Patsy Cline and Cats.  Regionally, he has also conducted productions for North Carolina Theatre, Sharon Playhouse, Shakespeare Theatre Company, The Engeman Theater, Paper Mill Playhouse, The MUNY and Cape Fear Regional Theatre.  He holds degrees from Manhattan School of Music and New York University.

Fun Facts

  • NEWSIES is inspired by the real-life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," which began when newspaper publishers raised the prices for newsies, charging a dime more per hundred papers.
     
  • The strike was led by a charismatic young newsboy named Kid Blink, who rallied oprhan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.
     
  • The Broadway production was originally scheduled for a limited 12-week run of 105 performances, however, due to popular demand, NEWSIES went on to run for 1,005 performances over two and a half years.
     
  • In the Broadway production, approximately 150 newspapers were used in every performance, specifically printed with the headline "Trolley Strike Enters Thrid Week."
     
  • NEWSIES was nominated for 23 major theatrical awards.
