EXTRA, EXTRA – IT’S A PITTSBURGH CLO PREMIERE HOT OFF THE PRESS!
They delivered the papers, until they made the headlines! Based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, NEWSIES is the story of Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who rallies “newsies” from across NYC to strike for what’s right after publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer threatens their livelihood. Winner of the Tony Awards® for Best Score and Best Choreography, audiences and critics alike call it “A MUSICAL WORTH SINGING ABOUT!” (The New York Times). Filled with one heart-pounding number after another, including the tap dance extravaganza “King of New York,” NEWSIES is a high-energy eruption of song and dance.

Disney's NEWSIES is available for purchase as part of the 2017 Pittsburgh CLO Summer Season Subscription Series.

Fun Facts

  • NEWSIES is inspired by the real-life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," which began when newspaper publishers raised the prices for newsies, charging a dime more per hundred papers.

  • The strike was led by a charismatic young newsboy named Kid Blink, who rallied oprhan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.

  • The Broadway production was originally scheduled for a limited 12-week run of 105 performances, however, due to popular demand, NEWSIES went on to run for 1,005 performances over two and a half years.

  • In the Broadway production, approximately 150 newspapers were used in every performance, specifically printed with the headline "Trolley Strike Enters Thrid Week."

  • NEWSIES was nominated for 23 major theatrical awards.
