  • The characters of The Addams Family were first penned by American cartoonist Charles Addams in 1938. They appeared in single-panel cartoons that were published in The New Yorker from 1938 to 1988.
  • The Addams Family premiered on Broadway in April 2010 after a try-out in Chicago. It was the first time the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation permitted the Addams Family characters to be used in a stage production. They required that the musical be based solely on Addams’ cartoons and have an original plot.
  • The Addams Family has been featured in television series (both live and animated), films and video games.
  • Charles Addams did not name the individual members of The Addams Family until the live television series was created in the early 1960s.
  • Charles Addams originally wanted to use the name Pubert instead of Pugsley.
  • The original Broadway cast of The Addams Family starred Nathan Lane as Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia.
  • The last actress to play Morticia on Broadway was Brooke Shields.
  • The book for The Addams Family was written by Rick Elice and Marshall Brickman. Elice and Brickman also wrote the book for the hit musical Jersey Boys, which earned them a 2005 Tony Award® nomination for Best Book of a Musical.
  • The Addams Family is the first Broadway show to be produced by Elephant Eye Theatricals, which was founded in part by both Pittsburgh CLO and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
