Behind the Music with Sparky and Smudge
Take a peek "Behind the Music" of Forever Plaid with two of the show's stars - Sparky and Smudge. They're eager to let all their fans know what makes them tick.
What is your proudest musical accomplishment?
SPARKY: We did the opening of the Stroudsburg Sears once...my cousin was the
manager there. There was an amazing crowd that gathered in the kitchen
appliance section. I remember singing "Perfidia" (which is my solo) and I
could see my reflection in all the toasters. It was totally boss.
SMUDGE: Bringing music to the grand opening of the Stroudsburg Sears.
Who is your favorite movie star?
SPARKY: Elizabeth Taylor. She was so beautiful when I was alive. Is she still
around?
SMUDGE: Cary Grant. So suave. He's the Perry Como of acting.
Who are your musical influences?
SPARKY: Well of course, the Hi-Lo's the Four Aces, The Four Freshman, The Four
Lads and the Crewcuts...And my mom. She could belch the "Hallelujah" Chorus.
SMUDGE: The Four Aces, The Four Lads and My Uncle Ned's Bagpipe Octet.
Who is your favorite singer?
SPARKY: In the group? Me. No question.
SMUDGE: Well, Perry Como, of course. Excuse me, I mean Mr. C.
Who is your favorite band?
SPARKY: There was a polka band that played at a little beer hall down the street
from our house. I guess they were pretty nifty.
SMUDGE: Gotta go with Uncle Ned there. I just wish there were recordings of his group.
What is your favorite car?
SPARKY: I died in a car, so I'd rather walk.
SMUDGE: After our accident, I think I'll stick with walking. But I used to dream of owning the 1955 T-Bird.
What is your favorite food?
SPARKY: Rice Krispie treats. Can't beat 'em.
SMUDGE: Hamburgers from my mom and dad's diner and Tang.
What is your favorite item of clothing?
SPARKY: I enjoy a plaid cummerbund.
SMUDGE: My plaid pocket square. I feel it really completes the outift.
What is your most cherished possession?
SPARKY: My retainer. Without that baby, I'd still be singing with a lisp.
SMUDGE: My original 45 of the song "Perfidia."
What is your goal as a performer?
SPARKY: I've pretty much reached any goals I might of had. Now I just let my
natural talent and good looks shine through.
SMUDGE: To be able to sing through our entire show without a panic attack or resorting to the use of Milk of Magnesia. It hasn't happened yet, but I believe in miracles.
